The Gore Vidals are one of the finest pop bands in Norwich, although chaotic by default, awkward and occasionally self sabotaging, the songs are sophisticated in a way most songwriters and bands have forgotten to even strive for. Will Barlow’s lyrics encompass a strange timelessness as well as a very real understanding of the frustrations and mundanities of modern life, a yearning for escape, a fascination with adventure, conquest and unlikely friendships. Underlying all this is a subtle and rewarding sense of melody and structure, these songs have been creeping up on me, unabated, for several years now.
